I'm usually a city dweller in a cloudy place, so haven't until now had the opportunity to peruse Mars during its current close approach. But now, I have the privilege of being at one of the better astronomical sites in the world, and I am most impressed by Mars.

It sits in the sky, glowering down with an orangy red glow. Its the brightest thing in the sky other than the Moon, and its quite easy to think of it as a glint from an evil eye, watching the earth with unsympathetic envy.

I wonder if there was a close approach by Mars sometime around the time Wells wrote his book?
