A little while back, in response to this posting by
lizw on the withdrawal of proper legal representation for many people at police stations, I contacted my MP and various London Assembly Members.
Apart from the expected absent response from my MP, I've been getting some useful replies from a number of my AMs. Specifically the Green and One London AMs on the Metropolitan Police Authority have expressed their concern on the matter, and I've just had a long conversation with a gentleman from the LibDems whose two MPA members are also concerned. One of my Labour AMs has been wriggling on this one, but I've yet to hear anything substantive back from him while the conservatives have been silent - possibly because I live away from anywhere they might get a seat.
On the basis of my conversation with the LibDem researcher it looks like this is going to be brought up with the Mayor and the police next week, and the possible pincer action through four MPA members concerned about this might be quite effective. The Met's current poor reputation only adds to the pressure.
The researcher I was speaking to mentioned that he was talking to someone else on this, a female solicitor. I'm guessing this is you
lizw, so we seem to be making a useful impact on this!
