As if the funding cuts in the UK and US aren't enough, now the Pope has decided to put the boot into astronomy.

He's evicting the Vatican Observatory from it's home in Castel Gandolfo and moving them to a disused convent. ElReg claims that this is a result of Pope Ratz's dislike of both science and Jesuits.

I might wonder what Brother Guy thinks about this, but I'm sure he's not saying. ETA: Apparently things aren't as bad as ElReg might portray - see links in comments.

Meanwhile the petition against the UK funding cuts now has over 10000 signatures but it still needs more - go and sign!

When this is done I think I'm going to have to go back and make the 'local' bad guys a lot nastier. They're just too gentle at the moment, and some governmental abuse and suppression will add to the tension and drama.

Of course this then has to be matched by making the non-local bad guys even nastier, but I haven't written them yet.
