I'm resisting the temptation to go back and rewrite the local bad guys as extra nasty right away. I think this is the right thing to do, especially since the second half of the novel, which I'm going to get to Real Soon Now, honest, won't involve them much (except their shadow, which I *am* writing in from now on, even though this will make things pretty inconsistent for anyone who reads it before the rewrite).

I think the reason it took me a while to work out what to do with these bad guys is that I've been seeing this society through the eyes of two people who won't really see the truth of what's going on - one is a native who grew up there and expects this stuff to be going on, while the other is someone from an entirely different background who won't see what's really going on until they whack her upside the head. I think I've also had a rather rose-tinted view of the place since I started dreaming it up and it's taken a while for this to tarnish as I've discovered more about how the place works. I still need to find out more about that, but it's getting to be a nasty but more believable place as I get to know it better.

Anyway - progress, and another day of 'something every day'. Not that this is a New Year resolution or anything.
