This has partly been because I couldn't get the bluetooth modem to actually work. Months ago I'd talked to Orange about this and it worked then, but not when I tried to use it 'in anger'. With the Worldcon coming I thought I should give it one more try, and now I have made a discovery...
It seems the phone has to be open for the modem to work. This is surprising. Bluetooth synchronisation and many other things work with it closed. But for the modem it has to be open.
How odd!
