Watch the launch of Astro-F live on JAXA-TV here, now!

Hopefully the launch will happen this time, and it will all go well...
EDIT: Well the launch seems to have gone OK. The next stage is separation of the satellite and making sure it works.
Thanks to the indulgent
purpletigron for allowing me to give an excited commentary of the launch when I was phoned :-)

Its now been confirmed thatAstro-F (now called Akari) is in the correct orbit and that the solar arrays have deployed correctly. The rest of it all comes together slowly over the next month. Soon they'll turn on the detectors are see if the instruments have survived, then they open the cryostat and allow the telescope to look into space. After that more detailed on orbit calibration and checkout takes place.
We might start getting data in 2 months!
All rather gruelling, but in 2 years I'll be doing this with 2 satellites simultaneously, and be much more 'in the loop' than I am now, so its good practice.
