Anybody got any experience of the Lexmark E120N which, at 92 quid, seems quite a good deal for a cheap laser?

Any other recommendations for a cheap mono laser?

1. What is your expected use (pages per month)?

2. Why do you want a laser rather than an inkjet?

Tens to low hundreds of pages per month, largely text and the occasional diagram/map.

Inkjets have always struck me as unreliable - the ink is prone to dry or clog if not regularly used - and the consumables are an overpriced ripoff. I don't have much need for colour, and in the unlikely event that I do, I can use the machine at work.

If you get the right inkjet (HP Business Inkjet range), the consumables work out cheaper than laser printer toner for plain black pages. For that kind of use, I recommend you look at the HP Business Inkjet 1200 range -- Plokta is currently printed on a 1200 dtwn. You can get a 1200d (d for duplex) for a bit over £100, and it should be cheaper to run than the Lexmark laser.

What about consumable lifetime? Low usage seems to be a problem with them, with the tendency to gum everything up...

I asked for recommendations over here. I went with the Brother HL-2030, which was quite cheap and works fine so far with both Mac and PC. I was slightly annoyed that it didn't come with a USB cable.

The network connection on the Lexmark is a positive feature for me as I don't necessarily want the printer tied to one computer. Having it as a networked printer sounds eminently sensible, so I can print from the laptop over wifi if necessary.

If the Lexmark has a network socket, I'd definitely go with that. I've got a Samsung Ml-2250 for about the same price, which I'm very happy with, but apparently the Mac support for it isn't great.

I had a Sharp laser which worked well for a few years. I found out that it paid to look around. I could buy the toner at approx 30% cheaper via a direct mail order company than buying in the shops or even directly from Sharp.
For text and even mono graphics it was faster than the inkjets I have today (but these do have more uses).
