I've always felt that those horrible little yappy dogs are more rat than dog, and clearly I'm not alone in this opinion:

(from Wired News)

Trained hawks employed to keep pigeons from making a mess on visitors in New York City's Bryant Park have been grounded because one of the birds mistook a Chihuahua as its lunch. An 18-inch hawk swooped down and gouged the diminutive pooch with one of its talons while the dog was nosing around in some bushes. The hawk was quickly separated from the pooch, and a cab was flagged down so the dog's owner could take it to a vet. "I sincerely believe the bird mistook it for a rat because it was in the shrubbery," said Thomas Cullen, falconer for the anti-pigeon program. Parks officials are now considering canceling the otherwise successful program.

So I can now think of those runty annoyances as bird food now as well!

*grin* I'll never forget the time I was looking after a boxer dog while her owners were on holiday, and one of our neighbours came by with her chihuahua. The poor boxer looked so bemused... "Hey, people, what do you want me to do with this? It smells like a dog, but it looks like a rat, you want me to kill it for you or what?"

all things considered had an interview with the handler of the hawks on (Thursday?) this week. Evidently they are going to put things on the hawks so they can't pick up the animals in future. The dog was scratched but otherwise fine.
