Expanded from a comment to [livejournal.com profile] lonemagpie:

I'm really not convinced about Simms as The Master. He is so far giving the impression of a petulant schoolboy, let out of detention and hell-bent on revenge. The Master, especially Delgado, was never like that. He wasn't hyperkinetic, he wasn't petulantly or gratuitously insulting, he wasn't threatening and gloating. He was charming, the ideal iron fist in a velvet glove. Polite, charming, warm, until the veil lifted and menace and evil were revealed.

I don't think Simms is unsalvageable - he might be reveling in a plan coming together after so long and we'll get something more like Delgado when things start to go wrong, or if we get to see him at an earlier stage of a later plan. But at the moment, not happy.

I think a lot of the fannish squeeage about the episode around the net is because of the window dressing, the nods to the past of the series - jellybabies, laser screwdriver, clangers-to-teletubbies, UNIT, Gallifrey, Jack, and the presence of The Master, even if he's not that great. Take all that away and what squeeage is left? A fairly incoherent plot, too similar to what RTD has written before, and some dubious characterisation of a new Master.

Things might get better next week - I hope they do - but I don't think its likely.

So all-in-all, not that impressed, especially after 4 such good episodes.

I've posted much the same comment about squeeage, so there are at least two of us.

Seems fairly accurate. The weird thing is that some of the people bouncing around all over the place are the ones normally the most cynical about new Who, I'm guessing too many old references imploded their faculties.

I'm wondering if there's a generational thing going on - those of us who saw a lot of old Master, especially Delgado the first time around, vs. those who have only seen that on VHS/DVD/BitTorrent.

And then there's those of us who have never seen the old Master...

There is that, yes! Hadn't thought of that...

It would be an interesting experiment, then, to get your reaction to one of Roger Delgado's stories - maybe Terror of the Autons or The Sea Devils. If you do P2P I'm sure these are available on BitTorrent, or, given enough notice, I could lend you them on VHS.

Actually, the post and entire thread are worth reading...

Not having watched much of Who in the past I think a lot of the references are passing me by. I felt last night's episaode to be filling the gap for the next one to come. If that one isn't a really stonking one I shall be disappointed.

I think we are being set up for something - The Master obviously isn't pulling the strings here, he's been set up to recreate the Time Lords, so of course he's acting strangely. His wife is obiously a LOT more than she seems, and the second Martha switches off the Paradox Machine the time dragons from Father's Day will come out to play. That's my theory anyway...

Didn't see it all but so far, not terribly impressed. If it wasn't for all the shots of Tennant and Barrowman running along corridors in their swishy coats I would be even more disappointed than I am.

It feels to me that the Master being the Doctor (specifically, Tom Baker), rather than his usual suave and evil self, is a deliberate choice - the jelly babies being the clincher there. It has all the hallmarks of a plot point to me.

If there isn't a very good reason for it, I will be disappointed.

But the Teletubbies quote (exchanging them for the Clangers) is a deliberate quote from the original Delgado Master. They were firing references around so fast that I don't think there were any specific messages being sent, they were just getting the fangirls to squee...
