Some interesting counterpoint to today's terrorism brouhaha in London. Essentially ElReg's point is that the list of items we've had so far for the car (propane cylinders, petrol and nails) do not a bomb make because there's no oxidiser.

Would anybody more expert care to comment?

Is this the C team of suicide bombers, even worse than the B team whgich tried to strike on 22 July 2005, or has ElReg's vulture's eye become just too jaundiced?

Enquiring minds want to know...

My impression is that it's a device inspired by the Fire Brigade and their habit of evacuating a half-mile radius any time there's a fire and there might be a gas canister nearby.

The petrol burns, heating the cylinders, which then explode randomly scattering the nails.

The thing that could be done with those cylinders is trying to make an FAE, but that takers delicate timing for the fuel-air mix to develop. You won't have that if you add petrol to the mix.

That's my thought. The thinking is clearly that they want a boiling liquid vapour explosion, but the execution is so utterly half-assed that "C-team" is the only reasonable verdict.

I've seen some reports talk of a detonator. It's basically a crude attempt to make a FAE.

Craig Murray's post on this pretty much sums up my thoughts. I'm keeping an open mind ATM, and treating official pronouncements with the unquestioning trust that they deserve.

Interesting comments, and it's always useful to remind people of London's past as a hot bed for intrigue.

johnfromnorwich highlighted a point to me this morning, that it might have more to do with the gay pride marches, rather than al quaida ... doesn't seem to even have been considered ...

Various people on my flist have been making the same comment about Pride. It's something that should be considered!

I'm wondering if the bombers were inspired by this recent incident, where considerable damage was caused by a gas cylinder explosion inside a vehicle. Mind you, that was acetylene.

And probably not just acetylene but (a) oxygen as well and (b) if caused by a leak it might have been producing an ideal fuel-oxygen mixture. This would be the easiest way of producing a home-made FAE (in fact I think some of the loons at General Technics have done exactly that) but that's one of the reasons why regulation surrounding OxyAcetylene kit is a lot stricter than that around propane.
