This is an interesting book, and quite an achievement. It tells of one woman's fight against unreason in general, and the practice of witch hunting in particular. Set in the late 17 and early 18th centuries and in both England and the Americas, it features appearances by Newton, Hooke and Benjamin Franklin. It's largely a historical novel except for the conceit that it is told by a book, Newton's Principia Mathematica. Much of the language is in a voice approximating to 18th century writing which doesn't make for an easy read but, in its own way, this book's 550 pages tell much the same story of the Enlightenment and the dawning of the modern world as does the Baroque Cycle's 2400 pages. Recommended, but not as light summer reading!
