The Today programme is on to the funding crisis again. The Freedom of Information Act has been deployed and some interesting dirty has emerged. It seems that STFC presented 4 funding scenarios with the one chosen by DIUS being specifically described as having dangerous implications for basic research, the UK's international reputation, and recruitment to physics.

And yet this is the one that they chose.

Is this cock up or conspiracy? Did DIUS just pick the wrong scenario or do they really want to cut back on basic research? That we still don't know.

The petition is here. Please also contact your MP about this matter. Whether cock up or conspiracy this has to be reversed.

I'd guess a mixture of both? They want to cut back, but didn't realise how bad their cutbacks would actually hurt because the senior staff don't really get science.

It'll be my first contact with the new MP, that'll be interesting (she's a Labour awkward squadder from what I can tell).

As far as science is concerned I'm not convinced that they do want to cut back. I think the problems of STFC are particularly complicated with the merger coming along at the same time as subscription increases, FEC and Diamond. What I don't think they're getting is the accounting and they're so embarrassed by this that we're starting to get macho bullshit push back saying they won't give in to whingers. I think this means they know they've screwed up but can't be seen to admit it. So we're probably screwed.

Getting the awkward squad on board is a good idea. Thanks!
