The Merchants' War Charles Stross

Cowboy Angels Paul McAuley

Nice take on alternate worlds, US politics and time travel all bound up in a crackingly paced thriller plot. Recommended. I was especially impressed with the use of alternate USs as commentary on US imperialism in the real world. I think this is McAuley's best book since The Secret of Life and would be happy to see it gracing award nominations later this year.

I'm interested in reading the McAuley to see how his book stands up to Mike Kube-McDowell's 1988 novel Alternaties, which has a very similar premise.

I read Alternities ages ago. It was certainly a good book, but I think McAuley is rather more emphatic on the political relevance. I also think he does the 'americana' better, but that's often the way with writers foreign to the country that they're writing about - they see things that the locals are too used to to notice.
