As some of you may have noticed on the writing blog, I've been listening to Miranda Sex Garden a lot while I've been writing. It seems to work well in providing an inspiration pump while not being so distracting that I get put off.

Unfortunately I seem to have everything they ever produced so I'd be interested to have your recommendations for anything that's similar. Once I would have used Pandora to do this, but the evil RIAA and it's clones in Europe have forced them to block anyone from outside the US.

So, dear flist, your mission is to suggest things like MSG that I might like.

Oh no, the rotters - I got round it before by just telling them a suitable zip code, but it looks like they've caught on to that, and have implemented something slightly more sophisticated.

I like what MSG I've heard (Madra, Iris, and the 'Gush Forth, My Tears' single) and I presume you're already aware of the Mediæval Bæbes. I'm particularly fond of early choral music myself and can recommend vast swathes of the stuff if that's the sort of thing you're after.

If I knew how to spoof my IP number I'd do it...

It's more the later stuff I'm after - more Iris and Suspira than Madra. Madrigals and the like I have elsewhere, including the MBs (who were great live the one time I saw them).

last.fm has a list of 'similar artists' - I've no idea how accurate this claim is, but it might be a good place to start.

The Shroud, Faith and the Muse, Mediaeval Baebes, Die Laughing, Love Spirals Downwards ...

... Last.fm points out that the lead singer of MSG moved on to the Medieval Babes and

"In 2006 Ben Golomstock released a solo album under the name Stories From The Moon which featured members of Miranda Sex Garden, Mediæval Bæbes, Queen Adreena, Colt, etc. which highly reprized the traditional MSG sound."

You could also try "Dead Can Dance"

or look at the list of similar artists at http://www.last.fm/music/Miranda+Sex+Garden/+similar

I too got dropped this month as part of the purge of UK IP addresses :-( ... but Last.fm is the closest I've found to a replacement service.

Going through that list right now! Some good matches there - thanks!

I've not come across last.fm before - I can see I'll be visiting it more.

I'm in the US -- want me to go there and ask?

Sadly it's a little more complicated than just getting a list. Pandora plays things it thinks are similar and you rate these to refine the search. It's really rather good, and you might want to try it yourself, but the music playing that makes it uniquely useful is also why it's blocked.

It's www.pandora.com if you want to try it.
