The news finally came today that my uncle with alzheimer's, who decided to stop eating just before christmas, has finally died.

I've not seen him for a while so haven't seen what the disease has done to him, but my one remaining uncle saw him last week and said that he was very poorly. He wasn't coming back from the alzheimer's and, at some level, I think he know that, which is why he hastened his own death by stopping eating.

Sad, but also something of a relief as I knew this was going to happen soon.
Mood:: 'sad' sad

I'm very sorry to hear this. My grandmother had Alzheimer's and it's horrible. Thoughts are with your family.

I'm very sorry. And it's ok to feel relieved, I think. The horrible thing about Alzheimer's and other types of dementia is that the grieving process often starts long before the physical loss of the person. I know when my grandfather dies, I was almost happy that he didn't have to go through those brief flashes of lucidity, and realising what his life had become, any more. So sending good thoughts.

I didn't see much of this with my uncle, but saw more with A's grandmother many years ago. That was really quite scary!
