STFC cuts, and the threat to Jodrell in particular, appearing on Thought for the Day, with the 2.5 million cost of keeping Jodrell and eMERLIN open being described as 'petty cash' to government and comparison being made to US astronomy forging forward (which isn't actually correct but is a good rhetorical point).

I hope DIUS, the science minister and the appropriate Secretary of State are beginning to wonder what kind of storm they've started. If they'd cut DIAMOND's operating budget by 10%, instead, this could all have been avoided and the cuts would have been lost in the noise. Instead the whole message of the CSR for science is 'cuts cuts cuts' and newspapers are seriously reporting the 'end of Labour's love affair with science'.

Is anyone going to raise a storm at Eastercon? Because it seems to me that we will have a lot of people in one place who ought to protest most strongly.

Maybe we can get the fledgling children's author, one Stephen H., to make a statement...

Interesting thought...

A number of us will be saying things on panels, I expect, but something more organised might be a good idea.

There are already two petitions on http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ - but I don't know whether either of them will serve the purpose best. (both focus on keeping Jodrell Bank open; not on the role of radio telescopes).

Someone with more experience ought to be able to draw up a better one, and Eastercon should create enough momentum to get the ball going. Right now, 25.000 signatures get you on the most popular page. Can fandom mobilise that many UK citizens? I'd like to try.

I've got very vested interests here. Maybe the call for a programme item or similar on this coming from someone 'in the SF community' rather than from a professional astronomer would be best. I can give you contact details for various people on the committee, and if they organised an item I'd be there for it.

I'm hoping someone else will volunteer to organise since I am absolutely snowed under right now, and I plan to attend the Sunday, but might not make it - but could you set down just why keeping these places open is so important?

Such a petition should really be publicised by someone who is attending all of Eastercon, for maximum exposure; but I shall _definitely_ mention it to the organisers.

I'm putting out some feelers... More news once I have some replies...

Okay - I've approached the committee with a suggestion. No idea what will happen yet.

But if you can contact them as well, asking if there's going to be such an item it might give more weight to the proposal. And that goes for anyone else here who might want such an item.

Jodrell Bank has this national pride element and they seem to like wrapping themselves in the flag..
