I agree completely with what Charlie says here.

That John Major is talking sense about civil liberties demonstrates how far New Labour has fallen.

Whatever Charlie says is protected, and I'm not allowed to read it, so I have no idea whether I agree with it or not. As for John Major, I have no idea what he says either, but hey, he's as capable of talking sense as the rest of us, surely?

Although the intention was presumably to garner information, such action is hardly in the spirit of the nation that gave the world Magna Carta, or the Parliament that gave it habeas corpus.

I don't believe that sacrifice of due process can be justified. If we are seen to defend our own values in a manner that does violence to them, then we run the risk of losing those values. Even worse, if our own standards fall, it will serve to recruit terrorists more effectively than their own propaganda could ever hope to.
I agree with John Major over the current Govt. On a major issue of policy.

This is wrong, damnit!

Well... I have, in the past, found myself agreeing wholeheartedly with the Editor of the DAILY TELEGRAPH over a piece of anti-terrorism legislation. Good for ALL of us, for being independant-minded thinkers who don't just mindlessly toe a party line! Sense and wisdom can (and should) be found in strange places.
