I'm not entirely sure they're understanding what I'm trying to do, but the comments are definitely useful, and they make some very nice positive comments too.
They invite me to edit it and resubmit, which is nice. I now have to decide whether to do this, or, as I was planning when I rattled their cage and found they'd lost the original submission, whether to make some changes and expansion and submit it to Nature Physics Futures instead.
