It seems that the christian response to the Atheist Bus campaign is about to strike.

Aside from the obvious complaints to the ASA about claims that 'There IS a god' and 'There definitely is a god', which are clearly stronger statements than the atheist bus 'there probably isn't a god' and thus requiring significant evidentiary substantiation, I think things should go much further.

I think we should start the Cthulhist bus campaign.

Not sure what the slogans should be, but the ever-popular 'Ia Ia Shub-Niggurath! Cthulhu Fthagn!' should probably feature.

I saw one of the Trinitarian ads this morning at Victoria.

They're not particularly well designed: many of these Xian adverts seem compelled to include a bible quotation, and these are no exception. Then there are the contrasting colours. Certainly obvious enough to make one able to tune it out as a Xian advert within moments.

Give them credit where it's due, the Alpha Course adverts are actually eye-catching and a little less ignorable.

Finally, a religious message I can get behind!

OK, far, far behind. But at least it's as provable as anyone else's.

Superb! Just watch out for the webs between the driver's fingers when he hands you your change.

...it's like "Oh my, for the love of all things squamous, please give me one of those!" but when you are so excited by a prospect that you don't have time to type properly ;D

I certainly don't see how anyone could complain to the ASA about that!

I was thinking of commissioning a bus with something like, "Actually, there probably are some things we should worry about."

That would certainly make good small print for the Cthulhu Bus!

Interestingly, Plantinga's modal version of the ontological argument shows that accepting the premise "There probably is a God" is logically equivalent to accepting "There necessarily is a God". And vice versa, accepting "There probably isn't a God" as a premise is to accept the necessity of God's non-existence. So the atheist statement may sound like a weaker statement than the Christian ones, but it's not philosophically.

And the advertising standards agency is going to be able to cope with that????? Your faith is greater than mine... :-)

It's quite a while since I looked at Plantinga's modal version of the ontological argument but, from memory, it depends on a number of hidden assumptions that you are only likely to accept if, like Plantinga, you are a scholastic theologian who likes to talk about possible worlds in terms of Tarskian semantics.

Though if you are prepared to accept Plantinga's assumptions and don't regard Charlie Stross's Laundry books as meaningless gibberish, there's a nice little argument for the necessary existence of Cthulhu that I'd like to sell you.

Oh go on... It would be fun to see a philosophical/theological cage match on my blog. I'm not sure I'd understand all the words though...

Nice idea. Reminds me of the Campus Crusade for Cthulhu. I keep meaning to print out a suitable poster of this CCC and put it on my office noticeboard.
