While in the US I fell over Ashes to Ashes being broadcast on the BBC US channel.

They were subtitling Gene Hunt.

Truly we are divided by a common tongue.

What appears to have bothered the US fans of the show is that they have only subtitled bits of Gene Hunt.

But then, I watch US shows with subtitles...

Yes, that's correct, and in my brief viewing I didn't quite understand how those chose what to subtitle and what not.

I've seen a lot of subtitling--though mostly not on fictional shows--of people with accents that I could understand just fine. But my husband has a lot of trouble with accents (including regional U.S.). Maybe it has something to do with my growing up in Southern Calif. and being taught by Irish, French Canadian, and Hungarian sisters and priests.
