Just when things start to get interesting, with things like the Clarke awards last night, my laptop decides to break down.

The poor thing kept freezing yesterday morning, and by the end of the day it wouldn't even power up most of the time. So it's awaiting a package to take it home to Apple for repair.

This means my network access at home is kaput, since it was the mahcine I was using there, and I have no replacement. Thus email to me and any journal updates will be tough until it comes back.

If anyone needs to reach me urgently then email to d.clements at ic dot ac dot uk should work (once you do the obvious to make that an email address).

OK, that is me decided then. One of the main reasons for not getting
an apple laptop is the fact that a few people I know (ok davorg) really did not like their reliability.

So it looks like I'll get another bloody pc clone.

To be honest, I'm not surprised that the machine has got a problem. I do treat it quite roughly. I've had it 2.5 years now (I'm not sure that any laptops are meant to last that long!) and it travels to and from work with me in a rucksack every day, and gets lugged all over the world. That much bouncing up and down as I run up and down escalators would strain any delicate piece of electronics.

To their credit the apple support staff were very helpful and the machine should be heading off to them for repair soon. Since I have a 3 year AppleCare cover, the repairs should cost nothing. And 3 years is really the upper end of viable lifetime for most machines.

SO my advice would be to stick with Apple, get the 3 year cover, and you should be fine.

And you get to stick two fingers bup at Bill Gates at the same time.

I've never had any reliability issues with Apple hardware I've used. My iBook is now 2.5 years old, and I've had it to pieces to replace the hard disk, taken it on many a plane ride and lugged it about the place for much of that time. I have a couple of desktop macs (~5 and ~8 years old) both of which are still in perfect working order. I only ever saw a couple of the macs at my school break (and they had upwards of 50-60 of the things)...

Just to give an alternate perspective on the reliability front.
