Talking to one of my colleagues at the telescope about US politics...

He's ex-military, a staunch republican, but says he's voting for Kerry so that Bush gets removed. And he thinks Bush is as good as gone.

So maybe there is hope after all!

Well Bush has made himself unpopular in many Republican circles through his utter inability to look after the budget. That seems to have annoyed a portion of his traditional constituency.

But isn't this just Reaganomics mk 2? And they seemed to have liked that...

I've heard relatively little whining about the deficit from republican circles, but I'm not a local so don't follow the news that assiduously.

Judging from the record of the last few presidencies, if these people want a balanced budget they should be democrats not republicans!

And he thinks Bush is as good as gone.

With Kerry's selection of John Edwards as VP, he may be right. The on-line democratic faithful are practically in raptures after a few days of dreading a Gephardt selection.

I think Edwards is a good choice - he's more southern, more charismatic, more 'conservative' than Kerry, so he balances the ticket rather nicely.

I still worry that Bush's people will 'engineer' something near election time to bolster his chances - this might be bin Laden's capture, or some new terrorist outrage - but I hope we're reaching the point where even that won't save him.

The suggestion by the Bush camp that conservative church congregations might like to turn over their membership lists for election purposes had a little to do with the change-of-heart, also.

Interesting...

One wonders whether this is a result of desperation or just of complete dunderheadedness...

Actually, I'm not convinced that they didn't do this in 2000 and it just wasn't made a big deal of.

PBS did a Frontline documentary called The Jesus Factor where they explore George W.'s (and, to a lesser extent, George H.W.'s) very calculated courting of the evangelical vote.

If they did do it in 2000 and it wasn't an issue, then that's arguably more interesting - it would suggest that there's much more antipathy towards Bush in evangelical churches than there was in 2000.
