Looks like there's some other observations being done on this island while I'm here.

Take a look here for sunrise at the current lava flows from Kilauea, the nearby active volcano.

There are other good ones at the same site. Have a look at:

http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/

and then go to Kilauea and Eruption Update.

Lets hope they never have an eruption update for Mauna Kea!

There is a part of me that yearns to see that in person and there is another part of me that wants to merely see its beauty in the form of a photograph. I've seen some of the chaos volcanoes can bring upon humanity both in Japan and at Mt. St. Helen's; it's frightfully amazing.

Kilauea, at the moment, is a quiet and continual eruption. The Hawaii volcanoes have been like that in historical times, I think. They are dangerous - the lava may be slow, but you're not going to stop it rolling over your house if that's where its going - but the erruptive volcaoes like St. Helens and Pinatubo are astounding.

We visited St. Helens in '96, and it was an astounding experience. Awesome in so many ways.

And the Pacific North West has a whole bunch of these monsters sitting there, waiting in their own time, until they're good and ready.
