I don't sleep well on planes, if at all, especially on the short 6 or 7 hour flights you get from the East Coast of the US to London. Jet lag thus gets compunded by lack of sleep and i end up like a zombie for days on end.
But help was at hand... I thought.
It seems airlines are advocating daytime flights now. You thus leave the US in the morning, and arrive back in the UK in the late evening. You can thus go straight to bed, having had a short day, rather than a long night. Since you probably have to get up fairly early to catch the plane you're already a few steps into time zone adjustment before you arrive.
I'm in Boston right now, and it was my plan to do just this... Up at 5am to get a 7am flight to Dulles, and then a daytime flight from there to Heathrow.
But it was not to be...
Two of United's Boston-Dulles flights this morning, including the one I was meant to be on, had maintenance problems and got cancelled.
I'm now due to leave here at about 3pm to connect to a Dulles to Heathrow flight at 6:30.
So I get the overnight lack of sleep jet lag flight as usual, aided and abetted by the up at 5am catch the early flight problems. Ironically I'll be leaving Dulles at just the time I was meant to be getting home.
This weekend was already going to be a bit tight since I'm due back in London on monday morning for an examiners meeting. Looks like its going to be screwed up even more.
Apologies in advance to all concerned who will suffer from the sleepiness, uselessness and general grumpiness that jet lag usually brings, especiall to

At least they have internet connections at the airport...
