I was in a shop yesterday and heard some music playing which sounded somewhat familiar. After about half an hour of mulling it over I finally realised where I'd heard it before: it was some music playing in the background of a scene in the landmark 80s BBC political thriller Edge of Darkness.
A little more digging and I found out more details of the song. After all, google is your friend. And reading the lyrics I find that it could just as easily have been writting in 2004 as in 1984.
The song was Christian Militia by New Model Army, and you can read more details here:

Sad that we've spent two decades getting back to the same place - mind you, there don't seem to be as many people recording songs like Christian Militia now, so maybe we've taken a few steps backwards...
