Keeping an eye out and noticing the difference between a pupil who is quiet, and one who is depressed is a good one (especialy if said depressed student is normaly quiet). And I think it would be a good thing if PE teachers were legaly required to be able to teach also - simply being a good coach for a sports team doesn't help one to teach Physical Education, which is more about general fitness and idealy should not involve sports except as an optional extra-curricular activity.
Oh, and there was one teacher who went crazy and threw squash balls at the pupils in GCSE Physics *shrug*.
But as I said, it mostly wasn't the teachers' fault - they did what they could and were mostly very competant.
