I can't say this is much of a surprise.
NASA's astronomy programme was in deep trouble ever since Bush announced the
'Mars initiative'. Of course that has also gone all quiet since the election.
I think it was Sen Barbara Mikowski (D-Maryland IIRC) talking to members of the
American Astronomical Society at the time that the Mars thing was announced
alongside the planned dumping of Hubble. She said to forget Hubble since all
of the rest of the programme was a target.
It won't be a comfortable 4 years for astronomy, and it'll be even worse for
earth observation where funds, I understand, are already being cut back from
missions that might reach uncomfortable conclusions about global warming.
Not that this makes me any less angry, but its what you get when you re-elect
an anti-science demagogue.
