It seems that Passports will not, now be designated documents, requiring fingerprinting and ID Database registration for renewal.
Instead, specific groups are going to be dealt with first. These will include those in 'positions of trust' such as security staff, carers and teachers and it will be done via the CRB system. This will start in about 18 months time.
Other victims who will not be fingerprinted (which surely devalues the entire scheme!) will be 16 year olds. Those applying for drivers licenses will also have to register.
This is all a far cry from the system as initially conceived and sounds as if it's likely to have so many holes that a US aircraft carrier could be sailed through it.
But if you need another reason not to become a teacher, or to leave the profession if you already are one, then you can blame the Blair/Blunkett/Brown ID Card.
Let's hope this is just part of the final death spasms for the whole idea.
