Family tradition was always to lean over the fence and yell "mint sauce" at the little lambs in the back field before retiring to the dining room (with view of said field) to tuck into an ex-lamb and mint sauce. Squeamish? Me? (I always worry, tho', that it was my rewriting of "Bright Eyes" as "Rabbit Pies" after the animated movie came out that helped my brother along the road to vegetarianism.)

I grew up with bull calves and the odd lambikin raised every year for meat. The names I remember are Beef, Veal, Sunday Roast, Mint Sauce, Rump and Chump, Gravy, Rissole, Burger, and Chop.

Every so often I have arguments with vegetarians (and the odd omnivore) about how could we eat animals we had a first name relationship with - to which my response is I'd rather be personally responsible for the welfare and well-being of my meat than treat it like a commodity in bits bought with no knowledge of the life it lead. In other words, I KNEW how my meat was treated, and the death of the animal it came from actually had a meaning for me. And no, it didn't stop me eating meat.
