... so I'll post a brief comment on the US election...

It Is a win for hope, for change, for saying that things can be different, and it's the right result.

Much has been said about what this may or may not mean for the US, for the world economy or on specific issues. I'll restrict myself to what this might mean for me, and for my direct experience of the US.

Over the last 8 years I've become more and more reluctant to travel to the US. Part of this is an increased awareness of the environmental impact of air travel, but, in the context of work trips where I don't get a choice, it's mostly a reaction to the unpleasant and hostile attitude of the US government to foreigners, and especially of the INS at airports. I've not had any significant problems myself, but there is palpable fear when you know that these people can do anything they want to you, and have done to others. It's going to take a while for this to change, if it changes, but electing Obama as president, a man who has lived outside the US for a significant part of his life, who has a more global and less isolationist perspective, who doesn't appear to believe that the US has a manifest destiny to become a new Rome, has got to be the right choice.

There's a long way to go, but electing Obama is the first step in the journey.

And now I have 2 months to find a new userpic for US politics posts!
