I'm back in Santiago, a visitor to the ESO Guesthouse and, as always, being well looked after.
It's 5 years since I was last here and things have certainly changed with the city, but the Guesthouse is the same as always. I suspect, apart from the added wifi and colour TV, it's much the same as it was when ESO started in the 60s.
Santiago has changed though. The route from the airport to the city is very different, along a new 6 lane highway that seems to go under much of the heart of the city in a huge, long, Boston Big Dig style tunnel. It makes for a quicker trip, but also hides some of the poorer parts of the city from visiting europeans.
And now, after rather longer on planes and in airports than I care to contemplate, I get to have a bath!
