Laws currently going through parliament would allow Home Secretary Jacqui Smith to create 'customs officials' answerable directly to her with powers exceeding those of the normal police. One of the key facets of a free, democratic society is the separation of police powers from the government. This bill directly undermines that principle providing another brick in New Labour's hopefully unwitting construction of all that is needed for a police (or 'general customs official') state.
