I'm in Kyoto, Japan, for a conference this week, and just had the rather nice experience of walking back to the hotel through a very foreign city.

A lot of the route went alongside the river. It was dark, and there were odd clumps of people sat on benches that we walked past. Many of them were playing, or getting ready to play, musical instruments - it seems practice by the river is a standard thing!

Further down, and on the opposite bank, we saw two separate large groups of dancers also practicing beside the river.

I wonder how this would go down beside the Thames...

I ran across a bunch of people practising marching slowly, and then on the spot, in preparation for the Notting Hill Carnival once.
