Thanks to Charlie for linking to the yearly reminder of things the new intake of undergraduates have known provided by Beloit College.

Some scary examples...

Most students entering college for the first time this fall were born in 1991:

Gene Roddenberry, and Freddie Mercury have always been dead

Margaret Thatcher has always been a former prime minister

Official racial classifications in South Africa have always been outlawed

And there are plenty more on their site!

Hmm, yes. [livejournal.com profile] wildeabandon invited some teenagers to our flat to watch Neverwhere. We were discussing politics over dinner, and attitudes to Thatcher came up, and I realised with some surprise that none of them had ever have lived under her government.

Indeed... What were their attitudes to her in terms of history? Was she regarded as some bete noir, used to scare the horses, a kind of national saviour or what?

Balanced. Good in some respects, bad in others.

Interesting... You wouldn't get that balanced a view from most of the people I know who lived under her (to coin a phrase). Maybe distance in time does help perspective.

and of course, this is the first year where my students will have been alive for less years than I have spent on the Internets ...

Oh dear... I've been messing with the internet and its antecedents since about 1982...

My baby brother falls into this category; the most striking one for me is that they don't know education without Nu Labour's numeracy and literacy hours.
