The Great Twitter Resignation

With Musk about to absorb Twitter it looks like there is going to be a great migration away from the annoying bird, but where to?

I'm not sure how many people's reading lists I'm still on here, but any of you who have comments on where to go please let me know.

The great advantage of twitter was its reach - while 280 characters is shallow, the large membership and open access meant that one could reach many people. This isn't something that applies here.

I'm beginning to think that social media platforms have a lifespan of about 10 years. I started off with newsnet back in the mid-to-late 80s, moved to LJ in the late-90s, early 2000s, and then largely shifted to twitter in the 2010s.

Now that Musk has come to shit all over twitter it looks like time is up on the latest platform.

Anyway, hello to anybody who has missed me here!

You might like either scholar.social (an academic focused server) or wandering.shop (for the SFF community). I can share other science related ones if you'd like some other options?

I missed the server angst as I had an invite! I'm on 'social', but it doesn't feel silo'd: I have friended people on other servers and that all seems seamless.

Don't know - I seem to be a specialist in obsolete social networks, since I'm still getting considerable value out of Usenet and e-mail lists. Good to see you, anyway.

Hello! I haven't been great at writing on DW recently, but I never stopped reading. I'm trying to work on writing more, starting by writing more emails, and am hoping to write more here too.

I have been active on Mastodon for a couple of years now, but not as an alternative to Twitter. I never got the hang of Twitter at all, but quite like Mastodon.

Mastodon.green for the reason that I do “green” science and I had no idea what servers I should join or why. Joined scholar, but not sure now how to link accounts (although still awaiting approval on the latter)

TBH, I suspect this will end up being like the >flee!< that occurred not so long ago when people were led to believe that WhatsApp was about to start serving them ads, or feeding their private messages into the Facebook datamill, or whatever it was.

The result was a few million extra accounts for Signal and Telegram, many of which will now lie dormant as their owners have gone back to WhatsApp after realising that actually, no, the sky wasn't really falling in.

Oh, and that the alternatives were actually quite manky, confusing and unattractive. 😏
