The Eel Shop

Anyway, here is the eel pie shop a little up the road from me. Yes its real, no I haven't eaten there (and don't intend to!). But this is meant to be the home of a real East End delicacy.

We must, must, MUST make sure that [livejournal.com profile] dear_hubby gets to visit this shop... it's still extant? I'm not a fan of eels myself, but he adores them (as did his father) and I think it would be great to give him a chance to experience some non-Dutch ones.

Crazy(now, just when could we plan this outing? *sigh*)Soph

I would like that... we'll have to put it to [livejournal.com profile] dear_hubby after the current upheaval is a bit past.

These will be boiled eels (the boiling is what makes them "jellied"). I understood that what the Dutch liked (and what makes the Dutch market a big enough absorber of eels to have driven the Southern English jellied eel into the luxury foods bracket) was smoked eels?

The smoked eels I had in the Netherlands wern't very nice, but as the phrase "there's wheels within wheels in jellied eels" has rattled round in my brain since I saw a 50's Ealing type film, I've always wanted to try some.

There's one near us, too. The oddest thing is that all the prices are really weird (things for x.73p instead of rounding up to x.75 or x.99, for instance). I suspect they converted everything very precisely at decimalisation and have just very mechanically increased the prices in line with inflation ever since.

I like eels in any way except jellied!

And yes, Del, smoked eel is the Dutch delicacy. Lovely lovely stuff.

FF, dreaming of eel sush.
