The headline on BBC News online says it all:

Blunkett quits as home secretary

Let's hope this is the first step to eliminating the ID cards/database state project.

The temptation to do a 'the wicked witch is dead' dance is almost irresistable!

Absolutely. It's the most pernicious piece of nonsense I've heard in a long time. I also hope for a more reasoned stance on dealing with asylum seekers, legislation about carrying knives, you name it ... I was not remotely surprised to hear that Blunko admired Howard. They have so much in common, except that we've not got rid of Howard yet.

The temptation to do a 'the wicked witch is dead' dance is almost irresistable!

I konw what you mean, but the problem is that, as is so often the case, the proper result has been arrived at for the wrong reasons.

Also, and I need to say this somewhere, it is practically guaranteed that if your leader says 'you have my full support', it'll be knives in the back within a fortnight.

I didn't think Tony Bliar had much support on anything, or is that changing?

Its not so much a matter of Blair having no support as there being a lack of a credible opposition, so he wins by default....

Sorry, I meant support from within his own party.

Thanks for reminding me. My UK passport is about to expire (my CDN passport expired long ago). They're charging CD$136 plus courier fees!

Interesting that the UK requires colour passport photos. Canada has moved to black & white only; largely because the Americans feel the definition is better.

Heard the expression: 'the more things change, the more they stay the same?'

Well, things are still the same here in Canada, ie. it's changing. Canuck passport photos can be colour again.

(No wonder we can't decide anything important: we can't even decide on a simple question with only 2 choices.)

Just wait until the biometric ones come in... You'll probably need to fly to Ottawa to get one then, or London, and the price will be greatly increased!

That's why I'm doing mine now!

Are passports still good for 10 years? The consular section of the British High Commission in Ottawa doesn't seem to have it on their website, and I'd heard rumours that the 10 years was changing to 5.

I believe they're still good for 10 years.

The possible shift to 5 years is that the data chips for the new biometric passports are only guaranteed for that length of time. They'd also be more expensive, more than doubling the cost of keeping a passport.

Good. My last one expires in March of next year (2005), so I need to off my but and renew. Before the biometrics come into play!

No chance; Clarke has been appointed as replacement and has committed to support them.

Remember, the main difference these days between the Tories and Labour is that the former despise the working class and are desperate to keep them under control, whereas the latter think that with a hefty enough application of carrots and sticks the working class can be can be turned from smelly feckless layabouts into model Islington residents. In other words, both lots are ruthless authoritarians, except that Labour believes they are imposing the Will of the State for everyone's good.

Dr Angry and I need to send a copy of our most comprehensive debunking of ID cards to the new Home Secretary post haste.

I think he minces his words;
if he has something to say, he should come right out and say it ;-)
